Category:Office software(Phys.org) —By the start of the 21st century, two-thirds of the worlds forests had been destroyed, and this degradation is continuing. Forest disturbances are so severe that its been estimated that by 2050, an additional one-third of forests will be lost.
But there is hope. Over the past two decades, the use of satellite data has increased greatly, and a variety of products are now available for monitoring and management of forests. Products are continuously evolving and improving, but a main challenge is still the combination of different products.
Researchers from The University of Texas at Austin, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have developed a method for classifying satellite data so that it can be combined, and a test was performed on some 13,000 Landsat 8 images from the past 19 years. The resulting product is now available for download.

The team is led by Peter Moore, who is a UT Austin professor of forestry in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and a member of the UT Vice President for Research. Moore said that the vision is to create a new standard for scientific management of terrestrial ecosystems.
"We want to make sure that the type of satellite data that is used and applied by our management agents is collected in a reliable and consistent manner. Its the sort of information that policy makers need to make sound decisions," he said.
The ability to combine satellite data is a major step forward, but there are still numerous technical challenges.
"The problem is that with the increasing volume of data, we need to be able to classify it as rapidly as possible, and also maintain consistency," he said. ac619d1d87
